Each client who comes in to see me all have the same question, “How long will my permanent makeup last for me?” While each client is unique in their own way, I explain the factors involved to how long it will last in their skin.

There are mainly 5 factors which I explain; 1) color of the pigment implanted, 2) concentration of that pigment implanted, 3) sun exposure, 4) absorption of pigment into their skin and 5) their skin color. I’ll explain further in detail.

1) Color of Pigment: Whether tattooing a blonde eyebrow or a black eyeliner, these pigments have their own strength in the skin. Blonde is a weaker pigment and therefore will breakdown or absorb into the skin much quicker than the black eyeliner. Many black eyeliners pigments have carbon-base in them which cause them to last longer.

2) Concentration of the Pigment Implanted:  Again, using the blonde eyebrow and black eyeliner as examples, in an eyeliner, the client may want a dense liner look where I’ll be using pure concentration of that pigment color. In the eyebrow, I’m not looking that type of density and prefer the soft, natural powdered eyebrow look, so therefore will dilute the pigment. By diluting the pigment, I am weakening it’s strength to hold, but with eyebrows, I’m not looking for longevity – I’m looking for a soft natural powdered brow.  The hair-stroke brow is also implanted very fine and softly.

3) Sun Exposure: Whether working in the garden or walking in and out of the grocery store, accumulated exposure to the sun will, in time, break down the pigment in your permanent makeup. Daily applications of sun-block, hats and sun-glasses absolutely are helpful in this area.

4) Absorption of Pigment: Pigment does not last in the skin forever. Why? Because pigment breaks down or absorbs into the skin and over time it will lighten up as it breaks down and then disappear. Some pigments are known to leave behind an undertone may be the last visible aspect of the permanent makeup.

5) Skin Color: Melanin plays a large role in how long permanent makeup lasts. I find that my very fair clients with blonde hair and blue eyes have a tendency to pigment breakdown/absorb into the skin faster than my darker skin clients. Why? The darker the skin, the more melanin is present. Melanin for these clients is likened to a built-in sunblock, therefore their pigment lasts longer than my fair skin clients. Some things we have no control over.

So, when a clients is in my room for a consultation, I am unable to guarantee just how long their permanent makeup will last because of these factors involved. I do share to the client – “when you have an urge to pick up a pencil to darken brows or eyeliner, this is a good indication that a refresher/touch up is due.”

I hope this help you to understand the factors involved to what makes permanent makeup lasts in your skin.
